Having never even attempted to master the stick shift, my job for all Ahluwalia-Jondle road trips is resident DJ and ace navigator. While these roles are essential, they leave free time for window gazing and trolling the interwebs on my phone. This week’s edit is a hodgepodge of what I discovered from the most recent trip to Boston for American Field’s Pop-up Shop.
Compiling epic playlists for road trips has become a signature of mine. Often the mega mix comes with a theme, depending on what occasion our destination has in store. Because we were taking Crusoe Jewelry on the road, the latest combination was shallowly all about the money, money, money. To make sure I had the right version of this iconic hit in the mix, I googled it. What I discovered is pure magic. Every music video should include both ironing and pumping iron.
One can’t help but get lost in the striking photographs of Mawlynnong, the remote village in India dubbed the “Kingdom of Girls”. Photographer Karolin Klüppel brilliantly captures the confidence and ease of the young girls of the village, rare traits for young women at that age. Klüppel attributes the matrilineal society for creating the unique vibrant characters.
Through the time capsule nature of Facebook, where you are regularly notified of posts from years past, you can see the friends and family age before your eyes. Illustrator Fulvio Obregon depicts icons in their prime next to today’s version. The result is a commentary on youth, culture and celebrity status.
Although I am half Indian, growing up in suburban New Jersey in the 80s meant my exposure to India was limited to stories and pictures that my dad shared combined with bite-sized Indian influences on Americana. As a young child, the lush, exotic jungle of the India in the animated classic The Jungle Book had me intrigued about this otherworldy land I had heard about, but didn’t know. The definitively darker version creates a bigger than life world of Mowgli and his beastly buddies.
