Fueling the Blaze of Creativiity: A weekly digest of what gets designer Maya Ahluwalia’s juices flowing

The Weekly Edit

Maya Ahluwalia

Music has the power to inspire, motivate, provoke and bring forth a whole host of other emotions with a few chords and well-placed lyrics. And because who doesn’t love a few good jams on a Friday, this week is dedicated to the music on my mind.

For the most part, when I find a band that I like, I stick with it and don’t venture out much musically.  This past week, though, a fundraising concert upstate introduced me to the New Orleans-based band Tuba Skinny. Only vaguely familiar with New Orleans style jazz, I fell for Tuba Skinny’s fresh and vibrant take on the signature style of music.  With Tuba Skinny, the lush greenery of a spacious backyard upstate was transformed into the bustling street corner of the iconic Creole-infused city.

When the goofy guy from Scrubs debuted his first independent movie, I was just as skeptical as everyone else.  As a born and raised Jersey girl, however, I couldn’t resist heading straight to the theatre when it opened. Like many others, the movie spoke directly to me, at the time I was in mid-twenties attempting to reconcile and adventurous life in the big city with the life I left behind. The soundtrack, which is just as prolific as the movie itself, evokes that particular moment of my life with every listen.

Most of my friends and family know my effusive love of MJ. The classic pop and RB-infused songs of the icon make at least one appearance on each of my running mixes. But the other stand out Jackson, Janet, only surfaces once for the rebellious duet, Scream. Recently, a friend re-introduced me to the pure guilty pleasure that is Janet, Miss Jackson if you’re nasty. Downloading Love Will Never Do, Black Cat, and If as I write.

It was a few years ago when someone blew my mind, letting me know that the star of childhood favorite Troop Beverly Hills is Jenny Lewis, the cool girl lead singer of Rilo Kiley. The video for her solo album’s single, Just One of the Guys, brings together the coolest of the cool girls: Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson, for a celebration of female awesomeness.
